You can now pay taxes with your mobile phone!
For the last two years, RRA has been trying to take its clients to the next level. The objective being “making tax payment easy”, RRA decided to move from “manual” to “online”. It is in this line that Rwanda Revenue Authority and MTN joined hands to launch a new facility enabling taxpayers to pay their taxes using MTN Mobile Money, which is a mobile cash transactions platform initiated by MTN Rwanda.
RRA had launched earlier the Mobile declaration system – commonly known as M-Declaration, for businesses with law income. Based on records, the M-Declaration has been very effective in improving service delivery, because it has considerably reduced the number of taxpayers attending RRA Offices. Moreover, the system was less time consuming, less costly and open 24/7.
However, if payment of taxes remained not facilitated, the puzzle would seem to be missing one important last piece. A lot of taxpayers still queued in banks waiting for tax payment most likely in the last days of tax declaration and payment. But this now is made history. Taxpayers no longer need to go to the bank to pay taxes. All they need is simply dial *182# and follow instructions.
This move is aimed at further easing up the process and cost of doing business, says Mr. Ebenezer Asante MTN CEO. It will also rank Rwanda 1st of its kind in Africa in doing business, hence a boost for Rwanda in terms of ICT development.
This facility not only allows payment of taxes, but also the payment of all other Non Fiscal Revenue payment. This includes payment of official services and documents like criminal record certificates, visa application, driving licence exams etcetera.
