RRA launches a campaign to recover tax arrears

Rwanda Revenue Authority recently started releasing lists of bad debts on weekly basis. Three lists have been released so far, and RRA has been calling everyone on the list to come and devise means of settling the debts.

Taxpayers are given a period of seven days after publication of the list. Those who failed to approach the Tax Administration are now finding their property seized and the next step will be to auction the seized goods.

The act of seizing defaulter’s properties started last week with Louis Ahoyezantije, the owner of Kabeza new market. This taxpayer owes the Tax Administration more than Rwf220million.

As stated by RRA Commissioner General, defaulters owe to the tax administration enormous amount of over Rwf55billion. If this money was recovered, it would contribute a very big percentage to the national budget.

RRA is committed to put more energy to recover this money. The commissioner General had advised all defaulters to clear their respective arrears, before a strong enforcement campaign is carried.

During the last operation of enforcement, Mr. Gayawira Patrick, RRA chief tax collector in his interview with journalist said that defaulters have been given enough time to comply with the tax law in all possible ways. It is time now for those who still don’t want to move to see their property being seized and auction in order to recover the lost government revenues.
