KIGALI 23rd September 2019 — Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) hands over to Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC) a cheque of 124,800,000 Rwf to support the elimination of Hepatitis C in Rwanda. The funds will finance the testing and treatment of up to 1300 patients.
This effort serves to join Ministry of Health’s campaign named “#RwandaCares” launched in December 2018 to eliminate Hepatitis C by 2024, by doing so, Rwanda will become the first country in the Sub Saharan region to eliminate Hepatitis C, way ahead of WHO’s recommendation to eliminate Hepatitis C worldwide by 2030.
According to RBC data, a total of 4% of the Rwandan population is estimated to be infected, under this campaign, at least 4 million Rwandans will be screened for the disease and a total of 110,000 who are infected will receive treatment which will reduce the current prevalence of Hepatitis C from the current 4% to 1%.
The contributions given out today was collected from all staff members of RRA in a bid to help the Rwandan community to be Hepatitis free and join #NoHepCinRwanda campaign.
