Pay VAT

The Value Added Tax to be declared should be paid within 15 days following the month or the quarter to be declared.

To process the payment, a taxpayer must have the RRA Reference number/Doc Id generated by the system after submitting the declaration.

After submitting the declaration, a taxpayer can be in position of payment, nil filing or in refund position.

Payment methods

Before you pay, you must first declare for VAT and get the RRA acknowledgment receipt containing the document number (Doc id) and the total amount due.

After declaration, you have three options of payment method:

1.E-Payment: by this method, after submitting your declaration via RRA system (E-tax) it is possible to directly access the domestic taxes E-payment system, by clicking ‘E-payment’ and Select Bank to pay from the provided lists of banks and follow the instructions. Also, you can use your internet banking system to pay.

2.Mobile money: If you are registered for this MTN service, you can pay VAT individually. You just dial *182# choose the language and go for pay bill option, choose RRA payment and follow the instructions provided in the acknowledgment receipt you got after declaration. In this case, you must have sufficient funds on your Mobile Money account to cover the amount payable, including transaction fees. Otherwise, you can pay via a Mobile Money agent who will also charge you some service fees.

3.Go physically to the bank: VAT as well as other taxes can be paid at all registered commercial banks in Rwanda. This can be done using a cash deposit slip or by bank cheque. When at bank, make sure you write the correct details on the deposit slip or cheque ( RRA as a beneficiary, your Doc Id , the total tax due and type of tax. i.e: VAT or any other tax).

Value Added Tax is indirectly paid by the final consumer of the goods or service.

However, a taxpayer registered for value added tax is obliged to charge the tax and remit it to the Tax Administration on behalf of the consumer.

VAT registered taxpayers are required to have at least one Electronic Invoicing System (EIS), commonly known as EBM machine, at each of their sales locations, and use it to provide EIS invoices for all sales transactions.
